Technology is the application of knowledge whose major concerns is on creation and the use of technical means for instance in innovation and invention.

Contributions of technology to culture

Culture entails knowledge of a particular group involving their language, habits, religion, arts and music among others. It encompasses what people wear, how they wear it, marriage, what people believe is right or wrong, how people settle their dispute at the table, how they handle visitors, how they handle their relatives more so how they preserve their norms. Culture therefore may be the act of unifying behavior, belief and knowledge by groups, companies or families.

Technology through the internet has contributed to cultural development.  Technology allows people to differentiate between a more traditional, passive experience and more active or participatory interactive conditions. The following are examples of technology contribution to the culture.

Communication

The ability of somebody to use of mobile phones, computers, email, intranet, internet and social media amongst others in delivering messages to their relatives is an example of application of technology. In the past communication was based on personal setting more so face to face communication. In present geographical distances have be reduced and many people rely on delivering more information through online platform. This has led to quick responses or changes in information conveyed, cost of geographical movement reduced and speeding up routine chores that rely on the communicated messages among others.

Methods of production

Technology has converted our culture from the use of wooden tools in production to use of machines in cultivation, tilling as well as harvesting of crops. The American industrial revolution made people purchase machinery-manufactured good from stores rather than making everything from the scratch. It also led to massive production and high interchange of products. Machine has taken the part of people in production thus making it easier to process goods within the given production time. Intermediaries in production have also been reduced since machine can serve as conveyer belts in the entire process of production. Introduction of fertilizers and other chemicals in farming has also ensured that there’s large production. This has been embraced by many cultures since the main goal is to heap high profits in production. Industrialization as a technological advancement has therefore freed up time used by individuals in making goods and services thus advancing their cultures. As farming has become commercialized factories have been established in the goal of producing more goods.

Rural -Urban migration

Introduction of technology especially in urban centers where jobs are assumed to be high has made people move from their rural homes to towns where interactions with other groups of people in the urban areas has contributed to the interchange their cultures. Movement from rural to urban centers has led to adaptation of the cultures in the town. This has also led to development of the rural areas with the suburbs extending to the rural areas. For instance the suburbs have reinforced infatuation in America with the automobile. In suburbs people commute to the next city using light-rail line thus fastening movement. Introduction of cars also made it easier to commute from the rural areas where the rail isn’t accessible.

Athletics and Sports related issues.

Each and every year there are athletics and sports taking place from different countries.  Non-member countries therefore have something to learn in the member countries where they visit. For instance in case of athletics where athletes are visiting a country in Africa, they learn the way of living, dressing, what Africans eat and how they worship among others. The same happens when Africans move to other continents for sports. The main side effect on these has been on the change in mode of dressing by Africans, and crimes especially during sporting seasons. Indeed there is high number of football fans in the world and with television sets being available this bring these fans together in avenues-a common platform-of watching soccer. Technology is deemed to have highly contributed on relocations of venues of the sporting actions.

Other contributions

For instance, the discovery of rubber in the Europe changed the culture of Singapore and Amazon people. Rubber was no longer considered rare as communities had been used to just growing crops for home use. But with adequate rubber there was minimized subsistence farming and maximized commercial farming so people changed their way of live to suit the commercial activities. There is also introduction of genetically modified seeds that are compatible with the environment of where the respective farmer reside. These seeds have helped to solve food shortages in areas where weather patterns are unpredictable. With that in mind, cultural practices, celebrations and other occasion have been rescheduled to go hand-in-hand with farming seasons.

Basing on the above contributions, it is therefore true to say that technology has contributed to cultural changes.
